The Waukegan Park District held its annual Turkey Trot on Saturday, November 14 at Belvidere Park. The event had 159 registered participants and collected 10 bins of non-perishable food items that will be donated to the Holy Family Food Pantry. Please click here for results.
The Waukegan Park District is hosting the fifth annual Food for Paws Holiday Pet Food Drive, which begins November 9 and goes through December 12. All donations will be given to WAGS (Waukegan Animals Getting Saved), a local organization that works to offset some of the costs involved in caring for homeless animals at Waukegan Animal Control. You’re invited to the 17th Annual Polar Bear Plunge hosted by the Waukegan Park District and the City of Waukegan on Friday, January 1, from 10-11am at the Waukegan Beach, 201 Seahorse Drive, Waukegan. Join the brrrrrave citizens from Lake County and plunge into Lake Michigan. Proceeds from the Waukegan Polar Bear Plunge go to the SRSNLC- Waukegan Scholarship program. The Bowen Park Theatre is seeking physical actors who are comfortable with heightened text, creating characters, and working as an ensemble, for a colorblind spring production of William Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors.” This is Shakespeare’s shortest and most farcical of
his comedies. The play is about two sets of twins who are separated at birth, mishaps due to mistaken identities and is filled with Shakespeare’s puns and word play. Performances run March 25 to April 10, 2016.
The Waukegan Park District held a groundbreaking ceremony for the indoor pool addition to the Field House Sports and Fitness Center at Hinkston Park on Tuesday, October 27. On hand to celebrate with the Waukegan Park District Commissioners and staff were residents, community leaders and dignitaries including State of Illinois Senator Terry Link who offered his congratulations to the district and Waukegan Mayor Wayne Motley who championed the project as a past park district commissioner. Kim Needham, Assistant CEO of Vista Health System, spoke on behalf of CEO Barbara Martin and Vista; she described how the project will provide rehabilitation services for Vista patients. The construction team was introduced: Ed and Paul Stuckey from Stuckey Construction, Doug Holzrichter and Andy Ouper from Williams Architects, the owner’s representative Jim Johnson and Jerry Aulisio from the AT Group and Harlan Doland from McClure Engineering. Also introduced was the Waukegan Park District team: Mike Trigg, Superintendent of Parks, Jay Lerner, Superintendent of Recreation, Errick Beverly, Manager of Sports and Fitness, Quincy Bejster, Recreation Supervisor Field House Sports and Fitness Center and Sam Stevens, Fitness and Aquatics Supervisor. More than 100 people were not deterred by the threatening rain and attended the festivities complete with cake and hot cider.
The Waukegan Park District Commissioners and staff extend their congratulations to Commissioner George Bridges on his appointment at this week’s City Council meeting as the new Chief of the City of Waukegan Fire Department. Chief Bridges has expressed his excitement and pleasure regarding his new role in addition to affirming that he plans to continue serving out his term as a Commissioner for the Waukegan Park District. Bridges commented, “As a leader at the City and the Park District, I am looking forward to helping shape the future of Waukegan.” We are especially pleased he will continue in his role as a Commissioner with the Waukegan Park District.
