Park District Happenings!

Incredible Bats! Learn about bats at a free family event on Friday, October 31, from 6-7:30pm at the Belvidere Recreation Center. There’s no better way to celebrate Halloween night than with one of the evening’s signature creatures – bats! An Egyptian Fruit Bat, and an African Straw-Colored Fruit Bat are featured!The show includes a presentation about bats, followed by a Q&A session and a bat craft for children. Children are welcome to come dressed in their Halloween costumes as well! Pre-registration is required by October 27. Participants can register online with program #1009 or in person. Ray Bradbury's Green Town Guided Walking Tours The Waukegan History Museum of the Waukegan Park District and the Waukegan Historical Society has a free guided walking tour titled “Ray Bradbury’s Green Town” coming up.  There are two alternate dates for this tour, Friday, October 31 at 5:00pm (ID #4558) or Saturday, November 1 at 10:00am (ID #4572). These free guided walking tours start at the Waukegan Park District’s Ray Bradbury Park at 41 North Park Avenue. Please click here for more information.

Community Recycling Event Bring your recyclable household items to Belvidere Park, 412 S. Lewis Ave., on Saturday, November 1 from 9am-1pm and stay for demonstrations. Again this event is a partnership with the Waukegan Park District and SWALCO. Please click here for more information regarding what are acceptable items.

River Road Bike Path Ribbon Cutting and Fun Run River Road Bike Path is Done! River Road neighborhoods and other interested community members are invited to join us for our River Road Bike Path Ribbon Cutting and Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, November 1, 2014 from 10 am to 11 am. Day of the Dead - Dia de los muertos The Academia Cultural Xilotl will hold their 4th annual Dis de los Muertos Ofrenda and Altar Exhibit a commemoration to loved ones on November 1 from noon-6pm at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts, 39 Jack Benny Drive. Dia de los Muertos is a celebration in Mexico, Latin America and certain parts of the United States that remembers and honors the departed by creating altars decorated with crafts and sugar skulls, offering such as Pan de Muerto, fruit, food and drink and symbolic art on this special holiday. Waukegan Concert Chorus - Renaissance Music Enjoy an afternoon of Renaissance music at the First Presbyterian Church, 122 N. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave at 4:00pm. Jack Benny Center for the Arts Is Recruiting Music Instructors Cultural Arts Division– Are you degreed in music or music education? Do you play your instrument as a profession or are you a member of a professional orchestra or ensemble? Waukegan Park District Receives Two Readers’ Choice Awards from the Lake County Suburban Life and Great Lakes Bulletin The Waukegan Park District is proud to have received two Readers’ Choice Awards from the Lake County Suburban Life and the Great Lakes Bulletin. The Field House at Hinkston Park was named the Best Fitness Center and Bowen Park was named Best Neighborhood Park. For more, please click here.

Waukegan Park District Receives Four Best of the Best Awards from the Illinois Association of Park Districts The Waukegan Park District was honored by the Illinois Association of Park Districts with four Best of the Best Awards at the Annual Awards Gala on Friday, October 24. Dan Moran, a reporter with the Lake County News Sun received the Illinois Parks’ Top Journalist award. Best Friend of Illinois Parks-Mid-sized business was awarded to North Shore Gas. The Cultural Arts Division received the Helen Doria Arts in the Park Award. Ralph McLean, was chosen for the Illinois Association of Park Districts Good Sportsmanship Award. Click here to read more.

Introducing Voice Instructor Rebecca Blumer Cultural Arts Division-Welcome Rebecca Blumer, newest voice instructor at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts. Rebecca will be teaching private voice lessons for ages 12 and up at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts on Wednesdays between the hours of 5-7pm starting November 12. The fee for eight half-hour lessons is $150 for residents and $155 for non-residents.  Please call 847-360-4740 for further details and to sign up for lessons. Yoga with Jacquelyn Cotey at the Jack Benny Center Cultural Arts Division - Experience Jacquelyn Cotey’s passion for yoga and health on Thursday evenings, November 6 through December 18, from 7-8:15pm at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts. This 6-week class costs $60 for Waukegan Park District residents and $70 for non-residents, class ID#3395, please register before October 30. Please call (847) 360-4740 for more information.

Park District Offering Programs for School Children During Teachers Strike The Waukegan Park District is offering several programs for school children during the teachers strike. These programs will be in effect on Monday, October 6th.  Click here for more information.

Free For All at the Field House Sports and Fitness Center During Waukegan School Teacher Strike The Waukegan Park District will provide a Free For All at the Field House Sports and Fitness Center from 10am-4pm, Monday - Friday during the Waukegan Public Schools teacher strike. To take advantage of the Free For All, students must present their Waukegan School District student ID when entering the facility. Children under the age of 11 can participate, but must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Click here to learn more how to receive the free admission.

Park Commissioner Nomination Papers Available There will be 2 park commissioner positions on the ballot for the April 7, 2015 election. The six-year positions currently held by Commissioners Terry Duffy and Pat Foley are up for election. Both incumbents are seeking re-election. Candidates seeking election as Waukegan Park District Park Commissioners may pick up nomination papers at the Corrine J. Waukegan Park District Receives the Government Finance Officers Association Distinguished Budget Presentation Award The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) announced that the Waukegan Park District has received the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its Fiscal Year 2014-2015 Budget. Buffet Dining at Bonnie Brook Golf Course Come to Bonnie Brook for buffet-style dining at the clubhouse from 10a-2pm on the last Sunday of each month. November brunch is on the 30th. Reservations suggested, please call (847) 360-4734 for more information.

Wednesday Night Dinners Year-round, come and enjoy Bonnie Brook’s mouth-watering Wednesday Night Dinners. The regulars will be the first to tell you, they love the midweek break from cooking at home. The dinners feature a wide variety of entrees, such as: fish, pasta, ribs and pot roast, delicious sides and a fresh selection of soups and salads. Dinner is served Wednesday evenings from 4:30-8pm. Our programs, facilities and committees serve the needs of our entire community and our volunteers play a critical role in our exceptional service delivery. Volunteers are needed for the following upcoming events:
