The 20th Annual Oakwood Cemetery Walk's event theme is "Firsts in Waukegan". The event will be on Saturday, September 20 from 12-3:30pm, rain or shine. Featured stories include: 1st Waukegan Fair, 1st Waukegan Baseball Team, Local Inventions, Glen Rock Pop, 1st Airplane Ride, Academy Theatre, 1st Telephone, 1st Lighthouse. Waukegan Park District Cultural Arts Division - Black and White and Paint All Over features the art of a Waukegan husband and wife team of artists, Bradley and Mary Haas. Their collection includes black and white photography and paintings done on location around Waukegan, Illinois. An artist reception was held on Thursday, September 4 at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts located at 39 Jack Benny Drive, Waukegan, IL from 4:30-6:30 pm. Click here for more information.
SRSNLC Special Olympic athlete, Pavel S., dominated at the State Competition in Frankfort, IL this August. Since becoming a Special Olympics athlete back in 2006, Pavel has participated in various sports that include volleyball, basketball, softball, and soccer. Having spent the last eight years playing the same sports, Pavel decided to branch out and try tennis. On his first trip to the District Tournament in July, he received a score of 110 points and a gold medal in Individual Skill Competition. With a first place finish at the District Tournament, he qualified for the State Tournament. At the State Tournament, Pavel competed against four other individuals and out of the four he was awarded a second place finish and a silver medal. The Waukegan History Museum has a new temporary exhibit titled "Waukegan: Then & Now." This photography exhibit analyzes 12 historic sites and shows the changes, if any that have occurred over the years. The exhibit will close September 30. Entrance to the Waukegan History Museum as well as the exhibit "Waukegan: Then & Now" is free and is also available in Spanish.
