Learn about bats at a free family event on Friday, October 31, from 6-7:30pm at the Belvidere Recreation Center. There’s no better way to celebrate Halloween night than with one of the evening’s signature creatures – bats! An Egyptian Fruit Bat, and an African Straw-Colored Fruit Bat are featured!The show includes a presentation about bats, followed by a Q&A session and a bat craft for children. The Waukegan History Museum of the Waukegan Park District and the Waukegan Historical Society has a free guided walking tour titled “Ray Bradbury’s Green Town” coming up. There are two alternate dates for this tour, Friday, October 31 at 5:00pm (ID #4558) or Saturday, November 1 at 10:00am (ID #4572). The Academia Cultural Xilotl will hold their 4th annual Dis de los Muertos Ofrenda and Altar Exhibit a commemoration to loved ones on November 1 from noon-6pm at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts, 39 Jack Benny Drive. Dia de los Muertos is a celebration in Mexico, Latin America and certain parts of the United States that remembers and honors the departed by creating altars decorated with crafts and sugar skulls, offering such as Pan de Muerto, fruit, food and drink and symbolic art on this special holiday. The Waukegan Park District was honored by the Illinois Association of Park Districts with four Best of the Best Awards at the Annual Awards Gala on Friday, October 24. Dan Moran, a reporter with the Lake County News Sun received the Illinois Parks’ Top Journalist award. Best Friend of Illinois Parks-Mid-sized business was awarded to North Shore Gas. Cultural Arts Division-Welcome Rebecca Blumer, newest voice instructor at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts. Rebecca will be teaching private voice lessons for ages 12 and up at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts on Wednesdays between the hours of 5-7pm starting November 12. The Waukegan Park District will provide a Free For All at the Field House Sports and Fitness Center from 10am-4pm, Monday - Friday during the Waukegan Public Schools teacher strike. To take advantage of the Free For All, students must present their Waukegan School District student ID when entering the facility. There will be 2 park commissioner positions on the ballot for the April 7, 2015 election. The six-year positions currently held by Commissioners Terry Duffy and Pat Foley are up for election.
