Summer is almost here, but those leafy oak trees that for years have provided shady beauty may be the next targets of a small army of predators that have been on the move for the past several years. If left untreated, Gypsy Moth infestation can lead to significant defoliation of hundreds of trees within a summer season. The Waukegan Park District has contracted with Hendrickson Flying Service, Inc. to conduct helicopter aerial spraying of BTK (Bacillus thuringiencis var. kurstaki) over sites beginning in late April and early May. BTK is a naturally occurring soil bacteria ideal for controlling leaf eating caterpillars on trees including gypsy moths. Click here for more information.

Each year, millions of shoes will end up in landfills. The Waukegan Park District is proud to partner with SWALCO and Nike to reuse/recycle worn-out athletic shoes. Shoes collected will be ground up and turned into new athletic surfaces like running tracks, playgrounds and other sports surfaces. Gently worn shoes will be donated to a local shoe charity. Athletic shoes may be recycled at the Field House at Hinkston Park during normal business hours. For additional information visit WWW.SWALCO.ORG or http://www.nikereuseashoe.com/

Last summer, thanks to support from Midwest Generation, the Waukegan Park District created a special place for children and families to socialize, learn, and discover called the Children’s Garden. Located behind the Jane Addams Center in Bowen Park, this small and quiet area is just waiting to be discovered. What makes this garden so unique is that children are the primary caretakers of the garden, and for the upcoming summer season, we have several garden boxes in need of children to care for them. We hope to secure three outside youth organizations who will plant and maintain the boxes throughout the summer. Click here for more information.
