Waukegan Park District to Host Golf Open House for Youth & Families

Waukegan, Illinois (May 23, 2024) – The Waukegan Park District is hosting a Golf Open House for Youth & Families on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 from 3pm to 7pm at Bonnie Brook Golf Course, located at 2800 N. Lewis Avenue. This free event is designed to introduce golf to youth and their families with tours of the golf course and clubhouse, short lessons, and a putting contest. Refreshments and shaved ice will be available, while supplies last. 

In addition to the Golf Open House for Youth & Families, the Waukegan Park District will be offering beginner and intermediate youth golf clinics, where participants will learn the essentials of golf, including rules, etiquette, and basics of the golf swing. 

Anton L. Mathews, President of the Waukegan Park District Board of Commissioners, stated, “With two golf courses and numerous golf programs, the Waukegan Park District is committed to introducing golf to the youth in our community. The open house will showcase how golf can be an enjoyable experience for youth and their families.” 

Jay Lerner, Executive Director of the Waukegan Park District, stated, “The Waukegan Park District is looking forward to introducing youth to the sport of golf at Bonnie Brook Golf Course. The event will be an opportunity for families to learn about golf and explore the fundamentals of the sport together.”

Established on December 26, 1916, the Waukegan Park District (WPD) has 53 properties and more than 742 acres of land, including the 18-hole Bonnie Brook and 9-hole Greenshire Golf Courses. Nationally accredited by the NRPA Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and State accredited through the IAPD Distinguished Agency Accreditation, the WPD has received the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Triple Crown Award for receiving the GFOA’s Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award, and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. The WPD was awarded the NRPA National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management in 2013, and was named a Gold Medal Finalist in 2012, 2013, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023.
