Waukegan, Illinois (May 30, 2024) – The Waukegan Park District and the City of Waukegan are partnering to offer Yoga at the Beach every Saturday in June, July, August, and September from 8am to 9am at the Stiner Pavilion, located at 201 E. Sea Horse Drive at the Waukegan Municipal Beach. The free yoga classes are open to individuals of all ages and skill levels.
Yoga at the Beach is led by Marlene Runyard, a longtime yoga instructor with the Waukegan Park District. The classes emphasize physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation. Participants are required to bring their own yoga mats.
Anton L. Mathews, President of the Waukegan Park District Board of Commissioners, stated, “Yoga at the Beach is made possible by an intergovernmental partnership between the Waukegan Park District and the City of Waukegan. The free yoga classes are a relaxing and revitalizing experience for participants of all ages.”
Jay Lerner, Executive Director of the Waukegan Park District, stated, “The Waukegan Park District is committed to partnering with the City of Waukegan to enhance the quality of life of the community with fitness programming. Yoga at the Beach is an opportunity for individuals to enjoy the natural beauty of the lakefront while improving their physical and mental wellbeing.”
Waukegan Mayor Ann B. Taylor stated, “There is no better place to start the morning than at the Waukegan Municipal Beach. Participants of Yoga at the Beach can connect with nature and appreciate the lakefront while improving their physical and mental health. I am proud that the City of Waukegan is partnering with the Waukegan Park District again this year to offer free yoga classes for the community.”
Preregistration is not required to participate in the free yoga classes. In case of inclement weather, the yoga classes will be canceled. More information, including dates and times, is available at waukeganparks.org/fitness.

Nationally accredited by the NRPA Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and State accredited through the IAPD Distinguished Agency Accreditation, the WPD has received the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Triple Crown Award for receiving the GFOA’s Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award, and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. The WPD was awarded the NRPA National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management in 2013, and was named a Gold Medal Finalist in 2012, 2013, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023.
