Waukegan, Illinois (July 1, 2024) – The Waukegan Park District is celebrating Park and Recreation Month, an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association, to highlight the impact of parks and recreation in the community. From the Arts Park Program to Zumba at the Park, there are so many free programs and events happening throughout July, with plenty of opportunities to celebrate and have fun.
Since 1985, the United States has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month. Created by the National Recreation and Park Association, Park and Recreation Month specifically highlights the essential and powerful role that local park and recreation agencies and their professionals play in building stronger, more vibrant, and resilient communities across the country. This year’s theme is “Where You Belong” celebrating the many ways park and recreation professionals across the country foster a sense of belonging in their community by providing welcoming and inclusive programs, essential services for all ages and abilities, and safe, accessible spaces to build meaningful connections.
Anton L. Mathews, President of the Waukegan Park District Board of Commissioners, stated, “This month, the Waukegan Park District will highlight the vital role that parks and recreation play in the community. Park and Recreation Month is an opportunity for individuals, especially children and their families, to gather, play, and learn at their local parks. Everyone is invited to celebrate Park and Recreation Month with the Waukegan Park District.”
Jay Lerner, Executive Director of the Waukegan Park District, stated, “Park and Recreation Month is the perfect time for individuals of all ages and abilities to enjoy their local parks. The Waukegan Park District will offer many different free programs and events at different parks throughout the month. With so many amenities, local parks are essential to building community.”
The National Recreation and Park Association and Waukegan Park District encourage individuals to share the positive impact of parks and recreation on their lives using the hashtag #WhereYouBelong on social media.
