Small Special Events (Projected Attendance: 100 to 999)

The Waukegan Park District hosts six special events throughout the year: Kids to Parks Day, Community Yard Sale, Fishing Derby, Oakwood Cemetery Walk, Día de Muertos Community Celebration, and Turkey Trot. Most small special events are free, but preregistration may be required to participate.

Large Special Events (Projected Attendance: 1,000+)

The Waukegan Park District hosts five large special events throughout the year: Eggstravaganza Trail, American Independence Parade, Touch a Truck/Waukegan National Night Out, Ray Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine Arts & Music Festival, and Halloween Trick or Treat Trail. All large special events are free and preregistration is not required to attend.

Youth Sports Programs

The Waukegan Park District offers several youth sports programs that focus on the fundamentals, teamwork, and sportsmanship. In all programs, participants learn the rules of the game, practice basic skills, and play games to gain experience and improve their skills. During every session, each participant receives a shirt to wear during the program. Sponsorships help cover the cost of the shirts. With every sponsorship, the logo of your business or organization will be printed on the back of the shirts.

Eggstravaganza Trail

The Waukegan Park District will host the 27th Eggstravaganza Trail on Saturday, April 19, 2025 from 9am to 11am at Corrine J. Rose Park, located at 412 S. Lewis Avenue. Children and their families will have the opportunity to hop along the bunny trail and collect eggs from the Easter Bunny and friends, while supplies last. Vendors and free entertainment, including pony rides, a petting zoo, and hands-on bubble stations, are available from 9am to 11am. The bunny trail is open from 10am to 11am.

Fishing Derby

The Waukegan Park District is hosting the 35th Annual Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 7, 2025 from 8am to 10am at Bevier Park, located at 2255 Yorkhouse Road. Participants will have the chance to win prizes in a friendly competition for the smallest and largest fish caught overall and in their age group. Competitions will be held for the following age groups: 4 years or younger, 5 to 8 years, 9 to 12 years, 13 to 16 years, and 17 years or older. Prizes will be awarded to the top three individuals in each age group.

Touch a Truck/Waukegan Night Out

The Waukegan Park District and Waukegan Police Department are partnering to host the Touch a Truck and Waukegan Night Out on Friday, August 8, 2025 from 5pm to 8pm at the Waukegan Municipal Beach, located at 201 E. Seahorse Drive. Attendees of all ages will have the opportunity to see, touch, and explore trucks, police vehicles, machines, and more. Following the event, the Waukegan Park District hosts a free movie at the Stiner Pavilion. The movie is family- friendly, with free popcorn available while supplies last.

Halloween Trick or Treat Trail

The Waukegan Park District will host the Halloween Trick or Treat Trail on Saturday, October 25, 2025 from 1pm to 3pm at Bowen Park, located at 1800 N. Sheridan Road. The event features an enchanted trail with professionally costumed characters. Children will receive candy throughout the trail, while supplies last.

Turkey Trot

The Waukegan Park District is hosting the 26th Annual Turkey Trot on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 10am at Waukegan’s Greg Petry SportsPark, located at 3391 W. Beach Road. Participants will have the opportunity to compete in races for a chance to win a turkey while helping the community with a canned food drive that will benefit the COOL Food Pantry.
